Welding Safety – Risks and Protection

Welding exposes workers to intense heat, sparks, UV/IR radiation, fumes, and molten metal. Certified PPE is essential to prevent burns, eye injuries, and respiratory damage. At Stennevad, we provide helmets, clothing, gloves, and respiratory protection tested to EN and ISO standards – ensuring welders stay safe, compliant, and productive in every environment.

Welding Safety – Managing Risks with Certified Protection

Welding processes such as MIG, TIG, MMA, and plasma cutting expose workers to a combination of hazards: intense UV/IR radiation, molten metal spatter, sparks, high surface temperatures, fumes, and mechanical risks from sharp edges or grinding work. Without the right protective equipment and procedures, these exposures can lead to acute injuries (burns, eye damage, respiratory irritation) as well as long-term health issues (chronic lung disease, skin damage, vision impairment).

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Welding

Effective welding safety requires a layered PPE strategy:

  • Eye and face protection: Helmets and shields (EN 175, EN 379) with auto-darkening filters protect against glare, radiation, and spatter.
  • Respiratory protection: PAPR or supplied-air systems (EN 12941, EN 14594) protect against welding fumes and particles.
  • Protective clothing: Flame-retardant apparel (EN ISO 11611, EN ISO 11612) shields against heat, sparks, and molten metal.
  • Hand protection: Welding gloves (EN 388, EN 407) protect against mechanical and thermal risks while ensuring dexterity.
  • Foot and body protection: Safety footwear (EN ISO 20345), gaiters, aprons, and hoods extend coverage against heat and falling metal.

Risk Management and Compliance

Welding safety is not only about equipment but also about correct application and compliance. Employers must conduct risk assessments in line with EU Directive 89/391/EEC and ensure workers are trained in the correct use, maintenance, and limitations of PPE. Regular fit-testing of respiratory protection, inspections of helmets and filters, and replacement of worn gloves or clothing are critical to maintaining safety integrity.
